Is CBD Safe For Pets & What Dose Do I Give Them?

Can CBD Help All Pets, and What’s a Suitable Dose?

CBD likely impacts dogs, cats, rabbits, and all mammals in much the same positive way it affects humans. The reason for this widespread therapeutic potential is that, as far as scientists understand, all animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish, have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). Even invertebrates like sea urchins, leeches, and mussels have an ECS.

For animal lovers with furry family members, this is encouraging news. It means that beloved pets could benefit from the therapeutic applications of CBD as well as their owners.

Is CBD Safe For Pets & How Do I Know?

We are 100% THC Free

As CBD is from the Hemp plant which is also where THC is sourced there is a lot of concern & ongoing studies about the safety of CBD for pets. Always ensure your choice of products are third party tested as 100% THC free, the same standard a vet prescribes.

What are the effects of CBD on pets?

Large-scale clinical studies on the effects of CBD in dogs, cats and other species are somewhat lacking. However, scientists know that CBD interacts with the ECS, helping maintain the healthy balance of many bodily processes. A well-functioning ECS is pivotal to health.

The human ECS is well studied. Researchers understand CBD’s role in anxiety and pain relief, appetite, digestion, and as a therapeutic agent against cancer and heart disease. The presence of the ECS in animals suggest that CBD will work equally as well for them.

A question people often have about CBD is if it will make their pet intoxicated or stoned. The short answer is no. High quality, properly sourced hemp CBD products must legally contain less than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is non-psychoactive as it has only trace amounts of THC, which ensures the user will not feel “high”.

Understanding CBD Dosage For Pets

Begin Slow & Increase As Necessary

With all animals, CBD dosage is personal depending on condition & weight. For any animal over 4kg, we recommend starting with 3mg CBD per dose, twice a day and increase after a few days, monitoring the results.

What is the correct CBD dosage for my pet?

The correct dosage of CBD has been the subject of much discussion and scientific research. Unlike many pharmaceutical drugs, as yet, there are no strict guidelines for the optimal amount of CBD to use for each person or animal.

In a comprehensive 2017 review, authors looked at numerous clinical trials and research in humans and animals and confirmed that CBD is a safe treatment option.

However, there was no singular, universal dosage of CBD suitable for every person or animal across the board. Instead, the review highlighted the fact that individual has dose-dependent optimal responses. What works for one person or animal won’t work as well for another. In the human studies, the dosages ranged from around 20 and 1,500 milligrams (mg) daily, which is a significant difference.

In another 2020 systematic review of CBD dosages across 25 clinical studies, the authors stated that CBD has a better side-effect profile than other drugs and that most studies reported no adverse events associated with CBD. Doses ranged from around 20 to 2,000 milligrams daily. No definitive conclusion could be made on the required amount for positive effects as it depends on the individual and the outcome assessed.

The authors noted that single, isolated cannabinoids might be inferior to CBD extracts with other synergistic components. This is known as the “entourage effect” and is the reason that Purity Hemp uses broad-spectrum CBD with the benefits of other beneficial cannabinoids, including:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA)
  • Cannabidivarinic acid (CBDVA)
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDV)
  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)

A suitable dose of CBD for your pet depends on several variables, including their weight, individual biochemistry, and the reason you’re giving them CBD.

Regardless, vets will likely recommend the best way to use CBD is starting with a tiny dose and gradually increasing it as necessary when you see how your pet is responding. Although you can’t overdose on CBD, it is possible that, depending on your pet, smaller amounts may be more effective than larger doses.

How to calculate the CBD dosage for your pet

In some cases, it’s straightforward to calculate the CBD dosage. For example, many gummies, capsules, and pills stipulate the amount of CBD in one serving, such as 10 mg of CBD per gummy.  It’s slightly more complicated with CBD oil that typically comes in a dropper bottle. If the packaging states the amount of CBD in one drop, you can use this to calculate the total number of drops needed.

If, however, the packaging specifies the amount of CBD in the whole bottle, you’ll need to calculate the dose. A single dose, not the full dropper, of CBD oil, is approximately 0.05 ml. Therefore, a 10 ml bottle of CBD oil contains 200 drops. Let’s say the bottle contains a total of 2,000 mg of CBD, meaning each drop contains around 10 mg of CBD. If your pet needs 20 mg, you should administer two drops.

Do vets recommend CBD oil for pets?

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is the governmental body that regulates the manufacture, sale and use of all veterinary medicines in the UK. The VMD consider that CBD is veterinary medicine, meaning that vets can prescribe CBD to treat pets.

Pet owners can now have meaningful conversations with the vet about using natural, hemp-derived products to treat their pets’ ailments.

It’s reassuring to know that major state-level regulators recognise the medicinal properties of CBD in the field of veterinary medicine.
