As CBD products continue to gain popularity, veterinarians all over the world are seeing a growing interest among their clients to prescribe CBD products for their pets.

And there’s a general agreement among vets that quality CBD products that are organic, can be traced back to their source, and do not contain THC can be a good thing. (THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis and can be harmful to animals.)

Pet products are expected to represent between 3-5% of all hemp-based sales in the US by 2025, at a value of over $1.3 billion.

With so much interest, and so many customers, what could possibly go wrong? Unfortunately, a new and fast-growing industry like this also brings the opportunity for fraudulent sellers to exploit the lack of general knowledge by selling dangerous and inferior products – products which could harm buyers’ beloved pets.

That’s why we at Purity Pet Company are excited to be launching our collection of premium, organic, hemp-based CBD products that you can trust for the global market.

Our organic farming partners across the Netherlands, the USA and Canada have built incredible legacies, creating natural formulas that can be used daily to improve physical and mental well being in both humans and animals.

For our UK customers:

Current regulations prevent companies from selling CBD products designed for pets. However, under the guidelines of the UK Government’s Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), vets can prescribe “human” CBD products to be given to animals.

These are normally just off-the-shelf, non-prescription CBD oils which can be added to a pet’s food, but you still need to take care when using them.

So, let’s recap: UK CBD sellers can only sell (human) CBD products as “food supplements”, and so are not allowed to make any medical claims or talk about the natural benefits of CBD.

And yet, the VMD classes CBD as a “veterinary medicine”, and recommends (human) CBD for pets. All clear? No, we don’t think so either!

At Purity Pet Company, we can help you navigate this confusion, and provide you with the most up-to-date information.

We abide by all the rules and regulations of the VMD, the MHRA and the FSA and, while we cannot recommend specific products for pets, we can connect you to our network of vets who can help answer any questions you might have.

VMD statement on veterinary medicinal products containing Cannabidiol in the UK:

We consider that veterinary products containing Cannabidiol (CBD) are veterinary medicines and should be regulated as such. We have made this decision on the basis that products containing CBD fulfill the following definition of a veterinary medicine in the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR) by virtue of the effects they have:

Any substance or combination of substances that may be used in, or administered to, animals with a view either to restoring, correcting, or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological, or metabolic action, or to making a medical diagnosis.

CBD products for use in animals therefore now require a marketing authorisation or before they can be sold or supplied in the UK. There are currently no CBD based products that have been granted a UK veterinary marketing authorisation.
